Greek Orthodox Icon Techniques
Our studio sustains the traditional technique of representing the holy icons. We create our icons on old, stocked with canvas wood. For example Oak, animal (organic) glue and leaves of gold.
As recommended in
The AA Spiral Guide to CRETE
''Yiorgia Petrakis paints Icons from the heart''. Standing at the back of the workshop
is her easel, specially adapted with wooden supports so that Yiorgia can rest her wrists
while working the Icons for long hours...
The National Geographic Traveller - Greece
''Young couple that preserves the art of hagiography alive with extraordinary talent.
Except for their Icons works, they also have byzantine paintings and other kinds of
Greek Cretan handicraft in their collection''.

What is more Greek than a Greek Orthodox icon, a religious painting on a wooden plaque? The Greek Icon tradition is kept alive by generation after generation of young painters who master the old materials (such as egg tempera) and techniques. Here in their Greek Icon studio workshop, a young couple, Georgia and Yiannis Petrakis work seriously at maintaining this art of Greek Orthodox Icons, Cretan School, and the art of hagiography alive.
Their Greek Orthodox icons are in demand from Greek Orthodox churches in North America as well as in Greece. Stop by and watch them at painstaking work - some of which are copies, but often with their original touches.
You don't have to be Greek Orthodox to admire or own one. They also have a selection of original Cretan jewellery, blown glass and some byzantine paintings in more popular tradition.
The Greek Orthodox Icon studio workshop is open from 10am-2pm and again from 5pm-11pm.
